In the News This Week

It’s certainly been a week of exciting digital news, hasn’t it? And whether you’re a gaming fan or not, the fact that the Pokémon Go app is now available here in the UK won’t have escaped your notice. We bet – amongst the sunny selfies and barbecue snaps, there were more than a few Pokémon-related posts littering your social media timelines over the weekend.

Never mind that for a minute or two though, what’s been happening in the world of SEO? And have there been any changes which will affect or benefit small to medium-sized businesses? Without further ado, here’s our usual Evergreen Agency ‘In the News’ roundup…

We’ll start with the news (via Search Engine Land) that Google is testing a new format for site links. Found under the search results snippets on some sites, the links are generally hyperlinks to important pages within a site – except they’ll soon be displayed in a block or carousel card format. Head over to the Search Engine Land blog and see for yourself how these will look; we think they’re a little cleaner in appearance but we’d like to know what you reckon too.

If you’re looking to shake up your social media strategy, look no further than Search Engine Journal. The team behind the site has compiled a beginners’ guide for those wanting to dip their toe into the water when it comes to engaging customers via Facebook, Twitter and Google+ – and it really is a good read.

Focusing on everything from common abbreviations in the world of social media, it also imparts a little bit of info about how SEO is impacted by platforms like Facebook. In short, it’s pretty much your one-stop-shop for hints and tips when it comes to setting up social pages for your own business or your clients’ brands.

Elsewhere on the Search Engine Journal site is this pretty enlightening piece regarding what’s next in search. The blog’s author quite rightly suggests that SEO is changing – and has done more rapidly in the last year than it has in the last five – which means we’re all having to get on board with new technologies. If you have the time this week, you could do a lot worse than check out just some of them in Anne Ahola Ward’s post, over on the site.

Moving on…here’s an informative piece via Blog Tyrant. In it, the author of the popular blog talks about how he doubled sign-ups on his site, simply by tweaking the design of his blog – find out how you can go about possibly doing the same by clicking the link above.

For those of you just starting out in business, Rand Fishkin’s Whiteboard Friday video, which went live at the back end of last week, is certainly worth a watch. This one’s about choosing a domain name and it offers some great advice for anyone who’s thinking about setting up a website – make sure you head over there to read the blog and watch the accompanying video.

Once you’ve set up your domain name, then, you might want to check out this post by the folks over at Yoast. It focuses on how you should ‘plan your website like your holiday’, putting time into various elements of it, just like you would when it comes to, say, booking a hotel or securing flights.

There’s some great advice in the blog, which lays out tips to help you determine what you’re hoping to achieve from your website, as well as how to manage your budget – happy reading!
