The Odd Company: how a 40 year old bespoke mattress brand reinvents itself without losing what made it special
The Odd Company started life restoring antique bed frames in Yorkshire. Customers kept asking for mattresses to fit them, cut out corners and all, and forty years later that oddness is still the thing that sets the brand apart.
Now at just over £1M and handmaking every mattress, headboard and base to order in Elland, marketing director Charlotte is steering the business into standard sizes, trade, and a much more competitive fight.
In this episode we get into the tension at the heart of that decision. Does a brand built on the unusual dilute itself by chasing the ordinary? Or is standard the only route to scale?
