This week, we reached a big milestone: Our 50th podcast episode.

Most podcasts never get beyond 8 episodes.

Fewer still reach 20 episodes.

So there was a real sense of achievement this week as we hit publish on our 50th episode.

To mark the occasion, we brought in a special guest – Joe Denham, who is the Director General of Gardenex, the Chairman of the Board at the Essex Chamber of Commerce, and the Chairman of VegTrug.

We asked Joe to come on to share his insights into exporting, as we know it’s a topic on lots of small businesses minds. If, when and how to trade beyond just the UK.

How Small UK Brands Can Start Exporting | 50th SpecialIt was a great episode and Joe was a good sport, even popping on a party hat, when we sprung the idea on him!

The only fly in the ointment was the audio, which as you’ll notice is not up to our usual standard, the audio file corrupted in post-production and the team had to work miracles to get anything remotely usable.

Not ideal, and of course it would happen on our 50th special, but c’est la vie, thus is life.

Over the past year, we’ve had some great guests and fantastic conversations.

The idea for our Grow with Evergreen podcast came from the team who would hear me talking to prospects on the phone every day.

They’d regularly say things like:

“That was a fascinating conversation.”

And,

“We should have recorded that.”

Alas, the idea was born.

It’s very fashionable these days to launch a podcast.

Most podcasts start and then fall by the way side very quickly, as we know.

When we were discussing what our podcast might look like, I was adamant on a few things.

“I’m only talking about what I am a true expert in – paid media and digital strategy.”

“I only want to talk to brands and businesses whose products and services I know, understand and have experience in.”

“I want the conversations to be honest, open and frank, just like when I have a prospect call.”

That was my criteria, if we were to launch a podcast.

The result:

paid media and marketing podcast.

Specifically for home, garden and lifestyle brands.

Who can apply to be our guest on the proviso they are willing to have an open and honest conversation.

To date, we’ve had over 60 guests join us for some great conversations (we’ve published 50, we’re about 10 episodes ahead in our recording schedule).

My advice to anyone thinking about running a podcast is this:

Make it niche and on a topic you truly love, otherwise you won’t have the sticking power.

Expect nothing back from it until you pass 100+ episodes.

Understand it’s a lot of work, so you’ve got to genuinely enjoy being in front of the camera/mic, otherwise you’ll give up.

I know some of you will be wanting to know the juicy details behind the pod, so here is some Q&A about our first 50 episodes.

Have we got a return on our time/investment yet?

No not fully. Nor would I expect us to. Our podcast episodes average 300-500 views/listens across the various platforms in their first month. We see this content as a long term investment into the business.

Have you won any clients from the pod?

Yes, several. When I’m talking to a prospect, I’ll often invite them onto the pod at the same time, as we get to know each other better, they get an hours free consultancy live on the pod and then we continue to talk afterwards. That’s happened a few times now.

How do we find guests for our pod?

We reach out to brands and small businesses we feel would be ideal guests. We email them (like this email now), we send messages on LinkedIn and we post regularly on social media about being our guest. We’re starting to see people apply of their own accord now, which is nice.

If you fancy joining us, apply here. I’d love to help you grow your business.

How do you find the time to record podcasts every week?

We batch record episodes. We typically record 2-4 podcasts every sitting, for example last Friday we recorded four episodes, so one day allocated to the podcast and we’ve created a month’s worth of episodes.

Is it worth it?

100% yes. I try to leverage as much of my time as possible, which means doing something once and getting paid for it forever, this is how I see our podcast and all of the content we create. We create a podcast episode today and it’ll be watched by a prospect in 10 years from now.

True story: I was talking to a prospect yesterday who reached out keen to work with us. At the end of the hour-long call, I asked where they found us and he said “On YouTube, I watched one of your videos where you were talking to a company that we know, admire and want to be like – I thought you gave some great advice and so wanted to have a chat”.

How powerful is that?

That particular episode was from months ago, and it’s still working for us. Beautiful.

That is why we love the pod and all of the content we create.

If you’re yet to indulge in the Grow with Evergreen podcast, then maybe now is the time.
